Book Series I want to read in the future (Book Series #5)

This is the final post in my planned book series lists. I’ve done book series I loved but DNF’d, book series I’ve started and will keep reading, book series where I’m waiting for the next book to be released, and book series where I’ve bought the first book but not read it yet (there were a lot of those!). But time for books I wasn’t to read in the future.

That means series where I haven’t read or bought any books in the series and at least the first book has already been published (and the second book has at least been announced). That might seem like a lot of rules but I still have plenty of series to add to this list!

Looking back through my goodreads want-to-read shelf to compile this list has made me remember some amazing books I added ages ago but now really want to read all over again (thanks past me). So this list got a bit longer than planned! I haven’t added every series that I have interest in reading just the ones I really want to read the most otherwise we’d be here till Christmas.

I managed to shortlist 11.

Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts

Being a bastard blows…

Tilla knows this all too well. Her father, Lord Kent of the Western Province, loved her as a child, but cast her aside as soon as he had trueborn children. At sixteen, Tilla spends her days exploring long-forgotten tunnels beneath the castle with her stable hand half-brother, Jax, and her nights drinking with the servants, passing out on Jax’s floor while her castle bedroom collects dust. Tilla secretly longs to sit by her father’s side, resplendent in a sparkling gown, enjoying feasts with the rest of the family. Instead, she sits with the other bastards, like Miles of House Hampstedt, an awkward scholar who’s been in love with Tilla since they were children. Then, at a feast honouring the visiting princess Lyriana, the royal shocks everyone by choosing to sit at the Bastards’ Table. Before she knows it, Tilla is leading the sheltered princess on a late-night escapade. Along with Jax, Miles, and fellow bastard Zell, a Zitochi warrior from the north, they stumble upon a crime they were never meant to witness.

Rebellion is brewing in the west, and a brutal coup leaves Lyriana’s uncle, the Royal Archmagus, dead – with Lyriana next on the list. The group flees for their lives, relentlessly pursued by murderous mercenaries; their own parents have put a price on their heads to prevent the king and his powerful Royal Mages from discovering their treachery. The bastards band together, realizing they alone have the power to prevent a civil war that will tear their kingdom apart – if they can warn the king in time. And if they can survive the journey…

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick RiordanI also want to read Heroes of Olympus but haven’t read the Percy Jackson series so I don’t think that is going to happen.

One day, he’s tracked down by an uncle he barely knows-a man his mother claimed was dangerous. Uncle Randolph tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god. The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years

Kings of Paradise by Richard Neil

Ruka, son of Beyla, is a monster. Single-born, twisted, and ugly, Ruka has the bright, golden eyes of a wolf, but his mind is as vast as the open sky.  Born in the frozen, snow-covered wasteland of the Ascom—the land of ash—Ruka was spared from death at birth by his mother’s love. Now, he is an outlaw, and dreams only of vengeance. But can a broken genius find redemption? Or once he has the world in his grasp, will he simply break it apart?

Across a wide sea is the white-sand island paradise of Sri Kon.

Ratama Kale Alaku is fourth and youngest son of the island monarch men call the Sorcerer King. And at sixteen, Kale is a disappointment. His father has sent him away to the navy, perhaps in hopes of salvaging a once-promising child, or perhaps just to get rid of him. Now Kale must prove his worth – and not just to his father. He must become more than a wastrel prince, or else lose all hope of purpose, or love.

And though Kale does not yet know how or why, he stands on the cusp of discovery. For his path, his ‘Way’, is perhaps the only hope for his family, his people, and as the storm gathers across an unknown sea, maybe the world itself…

The Glass Sentence  by SE Grove

Boston, 1891. Sophia Tims comes from a family of explorers and cartologers who, for generations, have been traveling and mapping the New World—a world changed by the Great Disruption of 1799, when all the continents were flung into different time periods.  Eight years ago, her parents left her with her uncle Shadrack, the foremost cartologer in Boston, and went on an urgent mission. They never returned. Life with her brilliant, absent-minded, adored uncle has taught Sophia to take care of herself.

Then Shadrack is kidnapped. And Sophia, who has rarely been outside of Boston, is the only one who can search for him. Together with Theo, a refugee from the West, she travels over rough terrain and uncharted ocean, encounters pirates and traders, and relies on a combination of Shadrack’s maps, common sense, and her own slantwise powers of observation. But even as Sophia and Theo try to save Shadrack’s life, they are in danger of losing their own.

The Star Host by FT Lukens

Ren grew up listening to his mother tell stories about the Star Hosts – a mythical group of people possessed by the power of the stars. The stories were the most exciting part of Ren’s life, and he often dreamed about leaving his backwater planet and finding his place among the neighboring drifts. When Ren is captured by soldiers and taken from his home, his dream slips further out of his grasp. Now a slave of a despotic Baron, Ren must remain inconspicuous while plotting his escape. It’s a challenge since the general of the Baron’s army is convinced Ren is something out of one of his mother’s stories.

Ren finds companionship in the occupant of the cell next to his, a drifter named Asher. A member of the Phoenix Corps, Asher is mysterious, charming, and exactly the person Ren needs to anchor him as his sudden technopathic ability threatens to consume him. Ren doesn’t mean to become attached, but after a daring escape, a trek across the planet, and an eventful ride on a merchant ship, Asher is the only thing that reminds Ren of home. Together, they must warn the drifts of the Baron’s plans, master Ren’s growing power, and try to save their friends while navigating the growing attraction between them.

Pantomime by Laura Lam

Gene’s life resembles a debutante’s dream. Yet she hides a secret that would see her shunned by the nobility. Gene is both male and female. Then she displays unwanted magical abilities – last seen in mysterious beings from an almost-forgotten age. Matters escalate further when her parents plan a devastating betrayal, so she flees home, dressed as a boy.

The city beyond contains glowing glass relics from a lost civilization. They call to her, but she wants freedom not mysteries. So, reinvented as ‘Micah Grey’, Gene joins the circus. As an aerialist, she discovers the joy of flight – but the circus has a dark side. She’s also plagued by visions foretelling danger. A storm is howling in from the past, but will she heed its roar?

Honourable mentions that I haven’t added because I’m honestly not sure I’ll ever read them:

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee – I’d have given up on this one apart from the fact the sequel is extremely interesting to me. If anyone reads the sequel and can tell me if the first book is necessary to read first that would be awesome.

Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse) by James SA Corey – this has been on my list for years but I never read it and now its a tv show and…. I might just watch it to be honest.

Every book on this list is SFF of some kind and I’m not sure if that’s my tastes or there just aren’t that many contemporary series? I do read contemporary books just not as many as scifi and fantasy. I can only name a couple that come to mind, so if you have any contemporary series recs hit me up (I need action/thrills/higher stakes than falling in love in my contemp, think one of us is lying or beartown).

Have you read any of these, or are you looking forward to reading them? Which ones should I make a priority? Any of them you’ve never heard of (a few aren’t very mainstream I think) but sound interesting?
