Series I loved but won’t finish

I really don’t talk about book series much and there’s so many to talk about. Mainly, that I’m really bad at reading them! I’m terrible at finishing a series of books as I’m a mood reader and I either read the whole series in a week or I don’t feel like picking the next book up. But most of my all time favourite books are series and Aurora has been talking about all of the unfinished series she has on her blog Aurora Librialis lately (You can see the latest one here but check out her whole blog because it’s great) and it got me thinking that it would be interesting to do a….. series…. of blog posts about all the book series that are on my radar in different ways.

This is going to include quite a few topics but I’m going to start with a list of series that I absolutely loved but won’t actually ever finish reading.

Why wouldn’t I finish a series that I loved? Honestly the main reason is that I have completely forgotten what happened in them and would be so lost if I kept reading. And with so many amazing books out there that I haven’t read yet, I can’t bring myself to go back and reread the other books to carry on. Moral of the story, if I really like a series I should read them all at once. But maybe one day? I don’t know, let me know if you think I should keep going with any of these series.

So without further ado, series I loved but won’t finish:

2

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

Read: 1   Own; 1   Published: 2/2

This is the oldest book on the list. So my memory is hazy. There were shape shifting dragons, a court, and a prince, and music…. And a group of half dragons linked in her dreams I think? That’s all I’ve got. I remember loving it but then I had to wait to buy the next book and then I didn’t and now it’s too long ago.

Malice by John Gwynne

Read: 1   Own: 1   Published: 4/4

This was an amazing epic fantasy that had a lot of similarities with ASOIAF, but, a lot of people died? And I needed time to heal and now, I just don’t remember any of the characters and I do remember being constantly confused about who was who even when I was reading it so probably not a good idea to try to read the next after so long. (also they are very long!)

4

Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine

Read: 1   Own: 2   Published: 3/5

Library of Alexandria, digital books, lion statues that were actually machines and would spring to life. I loved this book SO MUCH. And I do actually have the sequel on my kindle but…. I’m not even sure, I probably remember enough of this book to read it but for some reason…i just…. Haven’t? The buzz has left me and I know I should read it but it remains to be seen if I ever will. This is probably the most likely to ever get a chance out of the books on this list but there are so many books I want to read, someone save me from my TBR!

3

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Read: 1   Own: 3   Published: 3/3

So the first half of the first book was pretty meh for me but the second half was freaking mindblowingly amazing. I have the second and third books on my kindle but I don’t remember what happened. There was basically this massive war game. And I think he made friends with somebodies son or other and that was probably important and there were lots of politics and factions that were really important and I don’t remember any of it. This is not a series that I can bluff and keep reading like Ink and Bone. I would 100% have to go back and reread this book and like I said, I didn’t really like the first half? I mean I guess I could skip it, that would make it quicker to reread huh?

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Read: 1   Own: 1   Published: 2/3

This was a beautifully written masterpiece. I actually go back and read the opening scene description from time to time because, damn. Also the bit where he jumps off the roof because his tutor tells him to and nearly dies and the tutor is just like….i can’t believe you actually did it, you’re ridiculous! It was hilarious. But its also 700 pages long and the sequel is 900 pages long and I…. Have commitment issues? Also apparently the author does too because he hasn’t written the third book….

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Read: 2   Own: 2   Published: 3/3

Okay friends, gather around. I thought I had finished this series. I really really thought I’d read all three books but it turns out I only read two of the three and now its been so long (because I thought I had) that I can’t remember enough. There was an angel faction and then the ‘monster’ faction that were actually really cool and got reincarnated using teeth and it was amazing. I’m thinking maybe the romance stuff might have got to me and that’s why I stopped? I have a vague recollection of them being united at the end of book two and I might have rolled my eyes and put it down? I don’t remember though…. I want more monsters reincarnated using teeth, lets go back to that?

6

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

Read: 1   Own: 1   Published: 3/3

Fantasy reimagining of Greek gods in a second world fantasy, with fire magic and dragons and this is all I want in life but then half the book was about a really rapey romance where they had sex every time something exciting happened….. Um. No? Apparently the second book was even more explicit and had even less plot so not going there. Which is a shame. I need the author to go back and write this series without the consent sex/sexual tension. Or better yet, someone rec me fantasy books where greek-like gods affect the plot and play favourites (see I said greek-like? I’m not even fussy, just anything please).

Writing this post made me sad because I actually want to read these but now won’t. Have you ready any of these? Am I making a terrible mistake? Are you as bad as I am at reading series?

I think to balance this up next time I’m going to do a post on series that I WILL keep reading!

  1. I have a problem with finishing series, but I think it’s more due to not wanting to leave the characters. It took me forever to read the final book in Daughter of Smoke and Bone because I knew it was the end. I have several other “final” books to read, but I always seem to find excuses to not read them 😦 But they are all so good!

    1. Ah. That can definitely be a problem too. You end up missing the characters once it’s over. I normally end up online looking up fanfiction so I don’t have to say goodbye haha

  2. I couldn’t read the 3rd hunger games book, it bored me. However I read books 1 and 2 in record time! I rarely read series of books as I just fall asleep at bedtime and reading time during the day just doesn’t happen.

    1. I really struggle to read during the day too. But it’s great when you find something you love so much you just speed through

  3. Ah I feel the same with John Gwynne’s series too! I have read book 1 but it was so intense and long it took all of my concentration, and I’m just not ready to reread it AND move to book 2.
I really like this post, it’s cool to see why people don’t want to finish a series just as much as why people want to read them in the first place (I do have to recommend you get through the Red Rising series at one point though, although I agree you should really read them all together to know who everyone is!) 🙂

    1. That’s the problem with long books though. Sometimes they’re amazing and everything is relevant but…..they’re too long!
Hmmmmm. Maybe I should just do a month of rereads or something lol

  4. Ohhh seraphinaaaa!!!! That’s like major throwback to middle grade! I remember reading 2-3 of the books in the series but unfortunately I don’t remember anything. ANYTHING AT ALL. I think I should give this a try again??
